The Devonport Basketball Council basketball club in Devonport was formed in 1949 when George Russell, who was at that time a national fitness council officer, introduced the sport and later formed the basketball club in Devonport. When the Devonport basketball club started it was played on outdoor courts on the fire brigade track at the Devonport Oval and the Devonport Convent School and soon after in the Drill hall. Since then, with the foresight of George Russell, our basketball club in Devonport led to the construction of the Devonport Youth Centre in 1956 and later the development of the Devonport Sports Stadium in 1963 which is currently our club headquarters which is located in Forbes Street.

Devonport Basketball Council basketball club is Devonport's premier clubs, with a long history of serving as a beacon of future basketball athletes. We have served and continues to serve as the best competitive basketball club in Devonport. Our basketball club is the biggest club in the North West Basketball Union and one of the largest in Tasmania. Additionally, our basketball club in Devonport has over 950 registered members in both male and female divisions, starting from age 7 and upwards.
